On Thursday, March 21, we welcomed Rebecca Bayreuther Donohoe of Dirty Blue Shirts Living History.
Rebecca Bayreuther Donohue shared her wide-ranging research about life at sea, the fishing communities in New England and around the world who wore hand knits, and the global influences on the development of New England’s maritime knitting traditions.
Rebecca focused on the origins, evolution, and uses of the hand knitted hats, hand-coverings, wristers, and pullovers developed to clothe working mariners, and how these practical, useful, and often beautiful everyday wool garments protected their wearers from harsh and variable weather, the dangers of fishing in the open sea, and the hazards of prepping their catch for storage, processing, and sale. It was a fascinating presentation!

Remembering Barbara S. Tuceling, 1948-2024

L-R, Marilyn Huset, CKC Treasurer; Jennifer Lindsay, CKC President; and Barb Tuceling, a CKC Member and former Board Member, at Vogue Knitting Live, New York, January 26, 2019.
I’m sorry to announce the passing of a dear friend, colleague, and long-time CKC member and supporter, Barbara S. Tuceling.
When she was nearing retirement from the Smithsonian Institution, Barb attended CKC’s Founding Symposium in Madison, Wisconsin in 2012. She was already an avid collector of knitting and crochet, and was interested to see a museum develop through which she could preserve and share her passion for knitting and crochet, and her beloved collections.
Barb served on CKC’s Board of Directors from 2014-2017. After that, she continued to support CKC through membership, by sharing and writing about her collections, and by attending Vogue Knitting Live in New York City to support CKC’s outreach there. Barb truly loved knitting, and she was a warm, outgoing, charming, and energetic advocate for CKC who could make instant connections with anyone who visited CKC’s table at Vogue Knitting Live.
Barb’s activities as an accomplished craftsperson, collector, scholar, educator, leader, manager, organizer, and volunteer touched and inspired many individuals, organizations, and communities over her lifetime, including all of us at CKC. She was also a good friend, filled with kindness, humor, and generosity. She lived fearlessly, honestly, and with great joy. She will be dearly missed.
Her family will hold a memorial service to honor her at St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Annandale, VA on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
If you would like to pay your respects to Barb, and show support for or contact her family, you can read her obituary here for more details.
Jennifer Lindsay, CKC President

Crochet Guild of America Turns 30!
Gwen Blakely Kinsler wanted to let fellow CKC Members know that the Crochet Guild of America (www.crochet.org) is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year.
Gwen was much too modest to remind us of any of this, but she is the Founder of CGOA; she started the organization in 1994. She also published a book in 2013 about crochet as an art medium, featuring numerous notable crochet artists and their work, entitled The Fine Art of Crochet. Gwen’s book is still available from online retailers, including Amazon. In 2014, on CGOA’s 20th Anniversary, Gwen was inducted into the Jean Lienhauser CGOA Crochet Hall of Fame.
In 2012, Gwen attended CKC’s Founding Symposium in Madison, WI, and CKC is grateful for her support over the years. Thank you, Gwen, and Happy 30th Anniversary to CGOA and all its members!! For more information about the anniversary events CGOA is hosting in 2024, please visit their website — https://www.crochet.org.
