November 2024

Center for Knit and Crochet (“CKC”), centerforknitandcrochet.org, a digital museum for knitting and crochet, announces the opening of a new collection — the Maria C. Vallejo Lace Collection, Photographed by George A. Leinonen.  This stunning private collection of more than 350 handmade textiles will open online as part of CKC’s free digital collections on Sunday, November 24, 2024 at digital.centerforknitandcrochet.org/mcvcollection.  It will be of interest to anyone who loves knitting, crochet, and other needlecrafts.

The Maria C. Vallejo Lace Collection features accessories, garments, and decorative and functional textiles for the home dating from the late nineteenth to the middle twentieth centuries – a time when elegance in personal dress and entertaining were considered important social graces, and when many items in daily use were also handmade. The collection contextualizes crocheted and knitted textiles with other types of handmade textiles from the same time period, including tatting, bobbin lace, pulled thread lace, embroidery, and more.

George A. Leinonen’s dazzling photos of the Maria C. Vallejo Lace Collection allow online visitors to view the textiles, lovingly staged by Ms. Vallejo herself, at a comfortable visual distance, or to zoom in to see the intricacies of the handwork in each piece at the stitch level.

An opening celebration is planned for Sunday, February 16, 2025, at 2 PM Eastern US via Zoom.  All CKC Members and Donors are invited to attend this free event.  Visit CKC online to learn more about the Maria C. Vallejo Lace Collection, see a preview gallery of images, and register for upcoming events.  Questions?  Read our FAQs, or contact us at [email protected]
